3 tips for stress-free plane travel with a young child

A young child’s first plane ride can be overwhelming for both him and you, especially when he’s prone to tantrums. But don’t worry, with careful planning and preparation, it won’t be as bad as you expect it to be. Remember that you will have the support of the flight attendants and possibly other parents on the plane ride as well.

Here are 3 tips for stress-free plane travel with a young child:

Book an early morning flight

An early morning flight is more ideal for toddlers and young children. Flights are generally less crowded and there are more chances to avoid take-off and landing delays. The best part is that during the early hours of the morning, everyone still feels tired and sleepy, especially the children; there is a higher chance that they will want to take a nap during the flight.

It is also ideal to take advantage of early flight check-in (for passengers with babies and children). You will be offered assistance and will be the first to board the plane, which means there is less chance that you will be fighting down the aisle with an energetic toddler while carrying your luggage.

pack well

You don’t want to be the parent asking a flight attendant if crayons or gummy worms are available on the plane. Flights often have limited options when it comes to food and children’s items, so come prepared.

You know better than anyone what your child likes and what they need to keep busy. If your flight is short, a favorite snack, some water, and a comfort item (favorite toy, pacifier, etc.) should do the trick. But if you have a long way to go, pack the essentials (diapers, wipes, sanitizer, plastic garbage bag, extra clothes), some low-sugar snacks (pretzels, crackers, string cheese, granola bars, etc.) , water , art supplies, tablet (with your child’s favorite shows or movies), and headphones.

Don’t pack too much though, don’t forget you’ll be carrying luggage while caring for your little one!

prepare your little one

Children better know what to expect too. Get him excited: Tell him all about your destination and that you’ll need to travel by plane to get there. Show him videos or read books of other children enjoying a plane ride that will help him feel more comfortable when the day comes.
