a new state

I was watching a netflix series called The Queen’s Gambit. In the first episode, the main character, Beth, and her mother were driving the car. Her mother tells her to close her eyes and she crashes into a truck in a head-to-head collision. Instantly, Beth’s status changes to that of an orphan, because she doesn’t know who she is or where her father is.

At the orphanage, he keeps looking out the window and, like the other children, wonders if he will ever have a new mother or father. After a few years, her status changes to that of an adopted child. Again, her father is absent, but her mother becomes like a friend who helps her climb the ladder to become one of the best chess players in the world.

I don’t think we always realize this, but Jesus also made it possible for us to change our state. Our state was that of being lost. The road we were walking was the road to eternal death. But the death of Jesus was the sacrifice that completely changed our state. From being lost to being winners. From being orphans to being children of God.

10When he added, “I’m here to do it your way,” he dropped the former to enact the new plan, God’s way, whereby we are made fit for God through the once-and-for-all sacrifice of Jesus. .

I suspect that we are not always aware of what this state means. If we really understood what it means, we would live differently. But even the smallest opposition makes our legs weak and we stumble, because we forget our real state. We forget who our Father is. We forget that we belong to God and to Him alone. He will take care of us.

I got an email from Michelle in the Eastern Cape. She tells a moving story. Her new husband understands his status as a child of God. She had been out of a job for two years, despite submitting hundreds of job applications. But he still believed and with everything in him he clung to the Word of God.

Michelle said her faith wavered quite often. She got a job at a salon mall, but she lost it due to the shutdown. But when she gave up hope, her husband reminded her of the promises in God’s Word and that her Father would take care of them.

He fasted for two weeks and again applied for a job and was invited for an interview. Everything went well and they said they would let him know if he got the job. The phone rang on Friday and they said he didn’t get the forklift operator job he applied for. He was too well qualified, they said. They wanted to complement him in a higher position.

He received the position, salary, and benefits he had prayed for and trusted God for!

What a wonderful testimony from someone who knew exactly what his status in God is. He lives it. He lives as a son of God. Trust in his heavenly Father with everything in him.

Let this come true in our lives. May we also live like children with a new status at every moment, through thick and thin: I am from God!

Holy Scripture
Hebrews 10:1-10

Reflection
Do you know your new status?
Do you live your new status?
Can others see it?

Prayer
Our Father, thank you for my new status. Thank you because I know that I am a son of the heavenly God, participating in all the benefits and promises. Please help me make this mine and live accordingly. In the name of Jesus, amen.
