Broccoli Sausage Pie Recipe with a Whole Wheat Pie Crust Recipe

This is a wonderful recipe that we have been making for years. We try to reduce the fat by using low-fat cold cuts and cheeses. It goes quite well with a spicy sausage. We have not seen any recipe like this and we hope you will try it and tell us what you think. It is well served with a nice green salad and a glass of red wine, we think.

Broccoli and sausage cake

3 tablespoons unsalted butter

1 1/2 cups broccoli, cooked, diced

3 tablespoons of flour

1/2 pound hot sausage, crumbled, sautéed and drained

1 1/2 cup skim milk

milk, sesame seeds

3/4 cup grated Gruyère cheese or other cheese to taste

2 tablespoons fresh parsley

Salt and pepper

In a saucepan, melt the butter. Add the flour. Cook roux over low heat until thick and lightly topped, about 3 minutes. Off the heat, add the milk slowly, whisking. Return to the heat and stir until thickened, stirring or whisking constantly. Add cheese, parsley, and salt and pepper to taste. Heat until cheese is melted. Off the heat, add the broccoli and sausage and mix well. Let cool.

Divide the dough into 2 quarters. Roll 1/2 into 8 or 9 “, depending on the size of your pie pan. Place on a plate. Fill with broccoli mixture. Top with remaining rolled crust. Cut several slots on top. Spread with milk, sprinkle with sesame seeds Bake in preheated 350 oven for 25-35 minutes or until lightly

Golden. Transfer to wire rack and cool at least 10-15 minutes before serving.

Whole Wheat Pie Crusts

1 teaspoon all-purpose flour

1/2 cup whole wheat flour

1 stick of unsalted butter

1/2 tablespoon of salt

1 egg lightly beaten with 3 tablespoons of milk

Put flour and salt in the food processor. Pulse the butter until it resembles a coarse flour. Add the egg mixture and mix until it starts to come together. Form 2 balls, one slightly larger than the other (lower or upper). Cover with wax paper and refrigerate at least 1 hour before using.

Makes the crust for a cake that needs a top and bottom crust.
