Football – Really The World Game

Soccer: What terrible memories, thoughts and emotion that word generates. Right now the world is at the throats of the Soccer World Championship – yes, I call it soccer, because I think it’s the only true “foot” ball game. Just imagine the number of people who tune in to watch your country – if you qualified, compete on the stage of the biggest sporting tournament the world has to offer. The good thing is that all nations have some interest in this show. It is something tangible from South America to Australia. From Asia through Europe to the United States.

Imagine the passion of the supporters of these nations, when they score a goal to give them the lead in a particular match, or even more exciting, the winning goal in the World Cup Final!

OK, now that we’re in the mood of things, keep in mind that there are people on this planet who have little or no interest in this event or preparing for it. The people I am referring to are those who pursue the pleasure of the other “football” codes on offer in this diverse world of ours.

Let me explain: we have some other football codes that are played all over the world. The United States has its particular brand and in other countries Rugby League and Rugby Union are followed with some passion, the latter reaching a status of euphoria in countries like New Zealand. There is another form of football played in Australia called Australian rules football affectionately known as “footy”, although I tend to dismiss this game as a novelty sport, because it has never really been played around the world and cannot compare favorably with the other codes as a show, mainly due to the lack of foresight of the administrators. That’s not to say he doesn’t have a lot of followers.

Let me say this first. Any of the ball games is your cup of tea, fine. I can live with that. It’s just the title of your sport that seems a bit strange to me. I’ve heard critiques of football, I mean real football, making jokes about the ballet-like head prowess of some of the players and the acting talents of some of its professional entrants and to some extent I give in to that. .

But, the facts are the facts, irrefutable and concrete. This sport is the only soccer code that encourages the use and skill with the feet of its players. The word, my friends, is “football.”

In all other codes mentioned above, ninety percent of the time the ball remains in the hands of the players. It’s okay, they kick it every now and then, very occasionally in the US version. By the way, there could be an argument not to call that particular code “football” at all when you consider that they just call someone out onto the field of play as a stuntman to kick the ball to start a game or add “bonus”. scoring points to a team’s total.

Enough is enough. I could go on forever. I don’t think we can get to a court of law with this one, because everyone will have their own opinion on his favourite, but I think I’ve made a good case for football being the one and only football.
