From brass door knobs to silk rugs

Touch is a sense that is often overlooked. Sight, all the time, smell, sometimes we wish we couldn’t, taste, every four hours, and God knows there are always sounds that resonate in our eardrums, but touch is the neglected sense. That’s why when making important decisions about door knob hardware and cabinet pulls, it’s crucial to take your time and spend a little more to make your choices count.

Have you ever been to a doctor’s office and felt the sterile door handles, the way they conduct static electricity, and the cold touch of steel in your hands? These handles are purposely chosen in such frequent contact situations because they repel germs. You wouldn’t want that door being pulled at your house because your family (let’s say) washes their hands regularly and is not a carrier of disease. You can trust (most) the people you allow into your home and as such you want to convey an atmosphere that is healthy and welcoming.

Brass door knobs are a great way to convey that feeling. They allow you to fully grasp a doorknob, feel the hot brass, and slowly turn it, letting the lock slide off the door sill and open the way to a new room.

The same goes for the kitchen. Cabinet door hardware makes it easy to navigate the kitchen and encourages cooking. Cabinet pulls are great for drawers, while kitchen cabinet knobs are preferred when you’ve recently changed your cabinet finishes.

These small details make a big difference in your home environment, paving the way for more dramatic décor changes. Think warm colors and varied textures. It is applied even for textures that you do not feel on a daily basis. With your curtains, for example, you can take advantage of the synaesthetic way in which your eyes register the fact that they are velvet. A mohair or silk rug is another way to enhance the overall décor of a room. And in your bedroom, invest in pretty sheets that make you want to sleep. There are many other fabrics and materials to combine in order to produce a diverse and varied interior design. But above all, think about what you come into contact with most often; namely, the brass door knobs and the closet door hardware. After that, focus on combining different accents to produce a more complicated sense of individuality in your home, a place that says this is where I live and this is what I like to feel.
