Geneva – A city of surprising attractions

Granted, it might be asking too much of you to suggest that you should look forward to your Geneva airport ski transfers. At best, you probably think of that leg of your journey as a hurdle to get over to get to the slopes a little faster, or perhaps on the return journey, back home as soon as possible.

As understandable as it may be, there could be an opportunity inherent in such transfers, and that is the opportunity to stop and take a look at this great city.

A haven of sleep?

Although some people believe that Geneva is the capital of Switzerland, it is not, that honor falls to Bern. Perhaps even more common is the rather strange myth that the city is some kind of quiet backwater frequented by civil servants and politicians. That’s a view that’s harder to dispel because it’s so entrenched in popular assumption, but in reality the city is anything but grey.

It is an ancient city that has existed for millennia. It is surrounded by beautiful landscapes and sits on the world famous lake of the same name. So if you’re looking for beautiful architecture in a picturesque setting, you’ll be off to a great start here.

Not everything is stopped either. If you doubt it, try the part of the city known as “Les Pâquis”. It is a multi-ethnic place full of bars, clubs and restaurants and has a certain avant-garde culture. Regardless of what you may find, ‘boring’ is unlikely to be an adjective that comes to mind!

looking around

• Carouge – a charming little town close to the center and a hotspot for arts and crafts;
• The English Garden and the Flower Clock: world famous flowers and the clock has a second hand which, at 2.5 meters long, is reputed to be the longest in the world.
• The Reform Wall – dedicated to the key figures of reform in Geneva and well worth seeing;
