When it comes to dieting and weight loss, no matter how alluring the latest fad may be, no matter how alluring the radio or television commercials may be, eventually, everything has to go back to basics.

Everyone who has ever tried it, and most have tried it many, many times, knows that losing weight can be a difficult experience. Losing weight quickly can seem almost impossible. In each plan, you’ll see some ground rules that are either stated outright or hidden in the fine print. When you follow them knowingly and willingly, your weight loss will come faster than you expected.

Water: drink a lot. Its main function is to keep you hydrated, but it also cleanses your system of waste, not only liquid but also solid. You can have other beverages, but zero calories, zero caffeine, zero artificial water should be your drink of choice. Although you’ll see recommendations of eight glasses a day or so, I think the best rule of thumb is one glass of water every hour of the day. You’re awake, you’re active, you’re losing water through breathing and perspiration in addition to urinating, so while you’re awake and moving, drink a glass of water every hour.

Portions: cut them down a bit. Try any way you can to reduce the amount of food that is put on the plate in front of you. Order from the children’s menu. Get the smaller items on the menu. Use smaller plates at home. Impossible? Would it look bad at a company dinner? Then it only leaves 10% or more on the plate. Take it home (or throw it on the road) if you have to. Just don’t overcrowd it because it’s there. Smaller portions mean fewer calories and that’s what it’s all about.

Exercise: raise the level a little. Don’t overdo it. You want a small increase in exercise. If you’re usually sedentary, add a half-hour walk to your day. If you exercise a lot, add one more session on the bike or stair climber each week. Just a small steady increase is what you want. If you make too much too soon, you’ll find yourself hungry and consuming too many calories at the next meal, so take it easy.

Cocktails: avoid them. Beer, wine, mixed drinks: Although they are the social lubricant in Western society, they are deadly to dieters’ sleep. Empty calories that disinhibit, served in places that are also known for chicken wings, fries and pizzas. Even if you’re just at home, a bowl of peanuts or chips will take away a whole day’s work. While you’re dropping the pounds, stick with the mineral water.

Objectives: write them down. That goes for any facet of life. Written goals do something to the subconscious, it makes them more real. If you can take the time each day to visualize your goals as if they have already come true, you give your subconscious a goal to reach for and it will work to help you reach it. Break your big goals down into smaller intermediate daily or weekly goals. Lose thirty pounds by summer? Try breaking that down into weekly goals. Maybe two or three pounds a week? So each week’s goal is something more concrete, more achievable.

These five tips will help you reach your ideal weight and possibly faster than you imagined. The only really important advice is to make sure your weight loss is healthy for you. Check with your doctor before making any changes to your diet or exercise plans. You don’t want to stir up an underlying condition that you may not be aware of.
