Isle of Islay in Argyll and Bute

Visiting the Isle of Islay in Argylle and Bute is like stepping back in time. It seems that every step taken lands on something of historical importance. The beauty of the landscape only enhances the feeling that the entire island is haunted in some way.

The town’s roads are wider than you might expect and one of the main streets leads directly to a historic round church which also contains a graveyard. Just one step past the church, glimpses of the cool blue sea make for an inviting backdrop to this beautiful spot.

The town is best known for its whiskey distillery and the friendliness of the residents. The accommodations are cozy and a beautiful view is offered from anywhere in the city, be it the sea or the countryside.

Many archaeological expeditions have been carried out in recent years and many of the artifacts that have been found are on display in the city museum. Yet nestled in the countryside just a short distance from the city is Kildalton Chapel. This building is surrounded by interesting points that one will want to see for oneself.

There are regular ferry trips to other islands and many boats are available to offer tours of the surrounding areas. The city sits on the water’s edge, so you’re within walking distance of a pier or beach if you want to take a leisurely stroll at sunrise or sunset.

The restaurants, inns and pubs are located in the center of town and it is not necessary to leave a car to reach the points of interest.

If you want to take a long vacation and not be hassled by the staff, there are many cabins for rent that offer discounts if they are full. Plus, there are B&Bs that offer hearty meals and can give directions to many places you wouldn’t know were there.
