It is illegal to use a handheld cell phone while driving.

A law has just been passed in the UK that prohibits drivers from using mobile phones while on the move. In fact, this is not entirely true as the law has been around for quite some time. However, the authorities are cracking down on mobile phone use on the move and making it a more serious crime.

Until February 1, using a mobile phone while on the move could carry a fine of approximately $60. This was hardly an impediment and people could be seen at all times using the phone. There have been a number of cases where pedestrians have been killed due to drivers using mobile phones and losing control of their vehicles. The $60 fine wasn’t much of a dig for most people. Therefore, on February 1, the fine has been increased to $120 along with the endorsement of three points on the driver’s license.

It is believed that this may lead to a situation where people will think twice before using a mobile phone. However, it is debatable whether this will prove useful in general. The mobile phone has become an essential element to use at all times of the day and even at night.

Gone are the days when the only way we could communicate with other people was if we were at home and close to our landlines. Now the mobile phone is useful for general communication and for the more “important” communications involving the safety of children, loved ones and family members.

The risk of using a mobile phone only becomes apparent at times when authorities, such as law enforcement, are around to see the crime being committed. The vast majority of drivers of cars and other vehicles will know that they are safe most of the time to use their mobile phone without getting caught.
