Your mattress could be ruining your sleep

Our beds are a much bigger and more indispensable part of our daily lives, but how often do we really take notice of our beds (besides, of course, when we’re falling into them)? Not often enough, actually. There are a number of important questions we should be asking ourselves when it comes to our beds, more particularly mattresses.

What does it matter, you may be wondering. Well, first of all, consider that we all need adequate and restful sleep to function, i.e. perform our daily tasks, fulfill responsibilities like work, housework, parenting, etc. Second, inadequate sleep decreases productivity; it increases irritability and can eventually cause various health problems (such as diabetes, weight control problems, high blood pressure, etc.). Third, our beds (old or inadequate mattresses) could be the main cause of not getting enough sleep.

Here are a few things to keep in mind about aging mattresses that have probably seen their last good days:

They are warehouses and breeding grounds for allergens.

Older mattresses tend to be discolored, dusty, and often a bit smelly (we often just got used to the particular smell). These changes are caused by some slightly disturbing things. Discoloration and dust are usually due to flakes of dead skin, microscopic dirt from our bodies, sweat, and mites. Mites lay millions of eggs, live and excrete between the fibers of our bedding, for as long as we have them. These and other compounds break down, releasing stale gases from inside our mattresses.

All of these factors contribute to poor sleep quality due to inhalation of these microscopic allergens that trigger allergic reactions, such as coughing or wheezing; sneezing or nasal congestion, etc.

Your body’s mattress requirements change, but mattresses don’t.

Mattresses eventually lose their ability to properly support your body, the longer you sleep on them. Also, age, changes in body weight, and pregnancy all have an effect on this, as your body may require a unique mattress that is soft enough for your body, while still being firm. Inadequate mattresses, which don’t support our bodies enough, can lead to sleeping discomfort, loss of sleep, and waking up with aches and pains every morning. Therefore, it is important to ensure that your mattress is the right mattress for your body’s needs, in terms of the above, as well as your body type and preferred sleeping position.

Beds and sleep are not just mattresses

An often overlooked detail in getting a good night’s sleep is what’s in our beds. pillows We all have a favorite pillow and it’s hard to imagine that it could be contributing to restless nights and groggy mornings. The truth is, if the pillow doesn’t support your head and neck as you adjust to a more upright posture, it doesn’t do you much good when you’re trying to sleep. Buying quality pillows that fit your sleeping position, whether it’s on your back, side or stomach, is an investment in your sleep and essentially everything that is affected by it. There are a variety of pillows that are specially designed to provide support and comfort at night, to help ensure your sleep isn’t wasted.
