lighting in the kitchen

Probably the most important light in a room is in the kitchen. Since most tasks are performed in this central part of a family’s home, it’s important that the lighting is up to the challenge.

Using a variety of lighting in the room can help keep things bright and functional, as well as create certain moods. And the great thing about this is that it can be done on a variety of different budgets.

Consider adding a ceiling fan to a spacious, open kitchen. You can make it much more comfortable just by adding a breeze. It’s easy to make a dramatic yet functional change in a kitchen simply by changing the lighting.

The kitchen is a work area and as such needs lighting other than general lighting. Take a look at the dark spots in the kitchen. Perhaps adding some under-cabinet lighting would help show off your countertops while providing some much-needed light for that work area. A series of smaller, more direct lighting fixtures may be needed above the kitchen island to aid in food preparation. Above the kitchen or dining table, installing lights that can be on a dimmer switch can create a good atmosphere. And when it’s time to do homework with the kids, the switch can be turned up a notch to ensure adequate light that will help with eyestrain.

Mixing direct and indirect lighting will achieve the most dramatic effect. Since indirect lighting basically has the light source hidden from view, the light appears to bounce off the walls and ceilings, providing brightness and highlighting the walls and décor around it.

In general, keeping the kitchen perfectly lit creates not only a warm atmosphere, but also a functional living space.
