What skills does a writer need?

What skills does a writer need to be successful in their field? One of the main skills that a writer needs is perseverance. Writing is not an easy profession and a writer must be willing to accept a certain number of rejections before their work is accepted. However, perseverance alone does not guarantee a writer’s success. In addition to perseverance, a writer must also learn to use words accurately and accurately. Sentences need to be stripped down to the bone, reworked many times, and perfected until the sentence shines. Also, a writer needs a certain amount of imagination and the ability to focus on a topic and write about it in an original way.

So why should a writer develop those skills? A writer is a craftsman with words and, like any craftsman, a writer must want to become an expert in his craft. A good craftsman knows that the finished product requires a certain amount of time, patience, and skill. The craftsman learns those skills through practice. For a writer, skills are even more important. For example, notice the difference in these two sentences. John ate his food in silence. John sulked through his meal, avoiding eye contact with his wife, her face a mask, showing no emotion. “What have I done, Jon?” her wife asked, unsure of what he now had against her.

The difference in the two sentences marks the difference between good writing and bad writing. Good writing is precise, descriptive, and powerful, using words like an artist uses paint and a brush to paint a picture. Good writers aren’t born that way, they work to hone and develop their skill set. The essential tools for a good writer are a good dictionary, a good English grammar textbook, and plenty of writing practice. If you want to become a freelance writer, you need tough skin, an audience, and the ability to use words accurately and descriptively to write pictures using words. Writers are not born, they are created with a lot of work.
