Nassau, Bahamas in one day

The Bahamas gained full independence from the United Kingdom on July 10, 1973. Nassau in a day combines activities from days gone by under British colonial rule with recent Bahamian cultural additions. When you’re in the Bahamas, you have to relax… Now, let’s start with Nassau, Bahamas in one day…

Junkanoo Exhibition and Celebration

Visit the exhibit daily at Prince George Wharf (the cruise ship wharf). If you are lucky enough to be in Nassau from December 26 to January 1, join in the Junkanoo celebration expressed in music, art, and dance.

ferry rides

Ferries travel from Nassau to Paradise Island at the Port of Nassau daily. For three dollars per person each way, you can stop by historic sites and celebrity homes.

Horse and carriage rides

For a relaxing and historic tour of Nassau, Bahamas in one day, join a horse and carriage tour located downtown and at Prince George Wharf. The fee is approximately $10 per person for a 20-25 minute tour.

Jitney around Nassau

‘Jitneys’ is a term from the days of British colonialism. The ‘Jitneys’ are 32-seat buses that travel around Nassau for around $1.25 each way and offer a great way to see the sights of the city. Air conditioned nozzles have open windows…please be aware of this when boarding. Jitneys can help you turn “Nassau, Bahamas in a day” into more Nassau in less time.

Monastery of San Agustín

Who would have thought that Nassau would have a monastery? Benedictine monks will be happy to guide you through the cloisters and gardens in exchange for a contribution.

The gardens of Versailles

Huntington Hartford II (heir to the A&P supermarket chain) bought what is now Paradise Island in 1961 and built the Ocean Club, as well as establishing the gardens of Versailles. These gardens encompass grassy terraces and marble sculptures. The Ocean Club is very exclusive and you must make prior arrangements to include this location in your “Nassau, Bahamas in one day” itinerary.

Commonwealth Brewery

Just for the cost of making an appointment, you can tour the Commonwealth Brewery. Sip on a free sample of Kalik, the “unofficially official” beer of the Bahamas. Too many “samples” will turn your “Nassau, Bahamas for a day” into night.

Arawak Cay Fish Fry

After a free sample of Kalik, why not try an authentic indigenous fish fry? A “fish fry” is the Bahamian version of a seafood festival.

If your “Nassau, Bahamas in a Day” includes a Friday night, a town just west of downtown Nassau… Arawak Cay… is the place to go for authentic island cuisine. You can expect to pay around $10 for a large portion of food and drinks.

Nassau Pirates Museum

In the 17th and 18th centuries, the hidden inlets of Nassau/Paradise Island were home to many pirates. Pirates turned “Nassau, Bahamas in a day” into Nassau for life. Nassau’s reputation for piracy prompted Spanish forces to raze the city to the ground in 1695.

Today, the history of pirates in the Bahamas can be experienced in this museum. Expect to pay $6 to $12 per person for admission.

Phew! Nassau, Bahamas in one day will leave you wanting to stay in this paradise another day.
