The different types of juicers explained

Centrifugal juicers are still here offering cheap and fast juicing, this is what most of us start our juicing careers with. The centrifugal juicer employs a high speed shear plate and basket that cuts through the produce and squeezes the juice out of the pulp, a simple system and these machines can come with a huge feed tube that swallows the produce. Disadvantages can be that the machines can be of low efficiency and take a long time to clean.

Horizontal Single Screw Juicers, these are the simple single screw or screw juicers that offer a “masticated” style of juicing where the product is “masticated” and pressed against a perforated juice screen, the juice flows through the screen and the pulp is retained. and pumped out the front of the juicer. These machines are relatively cheap, highly efficient and easy to clean and live with and offer high quality cold pressed juice. The downside is that most of these machines have a fairly small feed tube.

Vertical Single Screw Reamers, sometimes called Verts or Slow Vertical Reamers, these are the new reamers on the block, they take the horizontal single screw design and turn it on its head to make the machine rotate in the vertical plane. These juicers have revolutionized cold press or masticating juicing as they stay true to the idea of high quality juicing producing low RPM juice but have larger feed tubes and gravity on your side so which increases the speed at which you can make juice. I currently use a vert for my main juicer.

Twin gear juicers, as the name implies, these juicers have two long gears that rotate towards each other crushing the product and chewing until it is ready for the auger stage to extract more juice. The Angel Twin Gear Juicer is still the highest performing juicer I’ve ever used, however it’s big and messy to clean, which is why I use my vertical slow juicer for juicing every day. The twin gear excels at extracting every last drop of juice from root vegetables and leafy greens, so I tend to use my twin gear when juicing vegetables with a green leafy vegetable component for maximum extraction. while growing my own green leafy vegetables.

That covers every style of juicer and which one I prefer for what kind of juicing job I’m doing. I believe the better your juicer, the easier it is to get into the health-boosting juicing habit. Enjoy!
