Computer Systems Analyst

A computer systems analyst has their feet in two different ponds: IT and management or administration. This role looks into the firm’s technology picture and finds where improvements can be made for more efficiency. They will also work on the initial installation of IT systems to ensure they are well-positioned for the future.

To be a computer systems analyst, you will need to have a bachelor’s degree in either IT or business. Some companies may accept a degree in another field as long as you have some verifiable IT experience and take related undergraduate courses.

You will also need to have excellent problem-solving and analytical thinking skills. You will often be tasked with developing creative solutions to complex IT problems. You will also need to be comfortable working with a variety of databases and software, including graphical user interface and query tools. Having industry knowledge is also helpful when communicating with management to determine the IT system’s role in their organization.

Genetic Counselor

As genetic testing becomes more available and people rely on it to make healthcare decisions, a career as a genetic counselor is expected to grow quickly. Those interested in the field should take some time to familiarize themselves with the profession and its training requirements, Hooker says. This could be done by talking to master’s program directors or practicing genetic counselors, she adds.

Genetic counselors assess a person or family’s risk of inherited disorders and advise them on their ramifications. They work with patients, their physicians and their families to support informed decision-making, coping methods and lifestyle changes.

Genetic counselors can also work with expectant parents, helping them to identify the risk of a child inheriting certain conditions and to decide whether or not to undergo prenatal screening. Genetic counseling is a “great blend of science, critical thinking, psychology and counseling,” says Joy Larsen Haidle, president of the National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC). Those who wish to enter the profession should consider getting a clinical internship as part of their degree program.

In many cases, human bias in hiring is due to informationprocessing shortcuts or heuristic behaviors that are hardwired into the brain. These biases often occur when people make decisions, and they are especially prevalent in stressful and high-pressure situations.

To combat biases, companies are turning to AI tools that read resumes and screen candidates for talent. But these technologies come with their own pitfalls. In addition, they need ML engineers to manage the ML environments that are constantly being tested to make sure they are producing accurate and trustworthy results.

Senior software leaders should also be ready to hire or train people for new roles like AI and ML engineers, suggests Zorina Alliata of OOP 2023 Digital. These roles aren’t yet present in current software engineering teams and require specialized skills. Additionally, they need to understand why agility is so important in developing AI products and how to lead AI change.
