How to litter box train a West Highland Terrier

First choose a suitable room with a sealed floor, such as the laundry room or bathroom. Put some dog litter or shredded paper in the box. Do not use kitty litter as it can be harmful if eaten. Also. paper is easier to clean if it is scratched or dragged around the house. Place the litter box in one corner of the room, with newspaper under and around the box to contain any “misses.” Next, get your terrier used to getting in and out of the box.

Using some treats, tease him, then give him the treat and praise him. He continues to practice for a few minutes until he is comfortable with the idea. Then begin house training as usual, constantly supervising your terrier, and when you see signs that he needs to go, quickly take him to the litter box and wait until he is finished, then praise him for a job well done.

The litter box will need to be cleaned regularly, aside from the smell, if it gets too dirty your dog will avoid using it. Just be sure to leave some slightly soiled paper behind to remind you where to go. When you can’t be there to supervise your dog, you’ll need to be confined to the room where the litter box is kept. Just like if you were training with paper, move your box or bedding into this room and cover the rest of the floor with paper. As the training progresses, the paper area can be gradually reduced.
