Writing Strategy: On How To Make Characters Reveal Through Their Words

People talk. They all do. But sometimes talking isn’t right when you’re talking about other people, no matter what your alibi is. Either you were jealous, envious, or just bitter. Yes, when people talk behind you, they either want attention or they want to ruin someone. Well, just like my characters in my stories, there are plenty of ideas for my readers to meet someone simply by pondering the words a given character uses. Yes, words have weighed on your character as a person. If you’re a respectable person, you won’t say words that you might regret later or, even worse, put people in a bad light. Unless you have the right motivation to do it and be a messenger of good news, enlightenment, etc.

Whenever we hear stories that so-and-so has this and that, we always think about why. Why do these stories arise, who are the promoters? What do they seek? How are they getting sane from this wave of slander or whatever you call them? Yes, sometimes people talk without really knowing the essence of speaking. We speak because we want to express our truth. We want to help establish an uplifting environment instead of becoming selfish and getting all the attention just because we’re angry, insecure, scared, or whatever. We limit our freedom of expression when we know our position very well. We don’t have a license to slander someone because we’re in a bad mood, or something like that. Yes, there are always correct ways to express or vent our negative emotions without further harming ourselves. Silence is one. Praying is another.

Dwelling on negative emotions won’t get us a plaque, medal, or trophy for being such a genuine person. What matters most is that we stay in control of our emotions and try to be fair and just and… nice guy who knows how to eat emotions, especially the unpleasant ones! Yes, breakfast in bed is nice after a hard day’s work, but no, it’s not when you had a fight last night. Protect your sanity, especially when you’re surrounded by short people who have nothing to be proud of more than their big mouths and insecure egos. Yes, this is one way to make a character believable and relatable. Just write freely, don’t censor ideas, because you could get a gem out of this writing exercise if you were in a world surrounded by noise just to get attention and all. Yes, on a market day. Vendors selling merchandise of different colors, sizes, and shapes. Just keep in mind that you might get a fake one and regret it later.
